A SHORT HISTORY OF THE CEYLON MEDICAL COLLEGE COUNCIL
The Colombo Medical School was started in 1870, and was upgraded to the status of a College in 1880. The administrative and executive functions of the College were handled by a Council (hereinafter referred to as the Ceylon Medical College Council, CMCC). In the document titled “Regulations of the Ceylon Medical College” for 1909-1910 it is stated that ‘During the year 1905, Ordinance No. 3 of 1905 entitled “an Ordinance to incorporate the Council of the Ceylon Medical College” was passed in the Legislative Council and received the assent of His Excellency the Governor on July 31, 1905, whereby for the first time the Council of the College obtained legal right to confer its License in Medicine, Surgery (LMS), and Midwifery, and its Certificate of Apothecary’.
